Our district has been selected as one of nine New Jersey school districts to lead a statewide effort to cut cafeteria waste. Through Sustainable Jersey’s new Sustainable School Food Service & Cafeterias Initiative, all nine districts will receive training, peer support, and grant funding to implement strategies. These efforts include waste audits, share tables, improved procurement practices, composting programs, and student engagement. The initiative is funded by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Gardinier Environmental Fund. Hip, Hip, Hooray for Hunterdon County Unsung Hero Jack Helias -- J.P. Case Middle School 8th-Grader Jack Helias was recognized at a ceremony on March 4 where he received an Unsung Hero Award. The Unsung Hero Award is given out annually by the Hunterdon County School Boards Association in coordination with the New Jersey School Boards Association. The award recognizes students who make outstanding contributions to their schools and communities, even though they are often overlooked under traditional student recognition guidelines. Unsung Heroes are students who make their school a better place because of their warm personalities, empathy, and concern for others. We are so proud of Jack for the example he sets for his peers and the contributions he makes to J.P. Case Middle School. As a proud Tiger, we heard Jack roar!

Francis A. Desmares School teams up with the United Way to launch the first in-school pantry program in Hunterdon County -- Check out this video of the ribbon-cutting event to open the pantry at Desmares School: https://youtu.be/8Y4aJaEn8xo?si=okTRlyGPaHIVdOvE.

The United Way of Hunterdon County partnered with Francis A. Desmares School to launch its first Pantries with Purpose school-based pantry initiative. The in-school pantry program helps to address the rising rate of food insecurity among children in Hunterdon County by placing fully stocked, confidential pantries directly inside local schools. These pantries provide shelf-stable food, healthy snacks, and hygiene essentials to any student who needs support — discreetly and without barriers.

“We are proud to partner with the United Way of Hunterdon and bring the Pantries with a Purpose to Desmares School,” said Principal Mark Masessa. “This partnership with United Way of Hunterdon County allows us to respond immediately and compassionately when a student has a need. The pantry will provide critical support while preserving dignity and confidentiality for our families.”

The pantry is in use five days a week during the school year, allowing school staff to respond in real time when needs arise. By putting resources directly in schools, the effort removes transportation barriers and reduces stigma often associated with seeking assistance.

To learn more, contact Gabriela Bonnavent at gabriela@uwhunterdon.org. Community members can also support the initiative by sponsoring a school pantry, donating shelf-stable food or hygiene products, or making a financial contribution to help open additional locations.
