RFIS Showcases Leadership at Statewide Institute

Reading-Fleming Intermediate School was proud to present for the second consecutive year at the New Jersey Department of Education’s Teacher Climate and Culture Institute, held at The College of New Jersey on July 28. Following overwhelmingly positive feedback from last year’s presentation, RFIS was invited back to share its work with educators from across the state. This year, Dr. Tony DeMarco, Mrs. Vanessa Ahmed, Mrs. Hannah Azofeifa-Urena, and Mrs. Rosemary Fleming presented Empowering Educators: Building a Culture of Shared Leadership, highlighting how RFIS uses a distributive leadership model to build trust, foster shared ownership, and empower educators to play an active role in schoolwide decision-making.

The session explored practical strategies for strengthening teacher efficacy, expanding leadership capacity, and creating a culture where staff members feel confident taking on leadership roles. Administrators and educators from across New Jersey gained insight into how RFIS is cultivating a collaborative school community where shared leadership strengthens school climate, supports teacher growth, and ultimately enhances student learning.

Pollinator Garden Awareness & Advocacy -- Deputy Commissioner Director Kuhl toured the RFIS pollinator garden with the school's Garden Club and Garden Steward and Board of Education member, Julia Whitley. The County Commissioners were invited to the RFIS garden to raise awareness of Monarch butterflies as part of their effort to receive their third New Jersey Audubon Green Flag, the highest level of sustainability efforts in the ECO Schools program. The students shared that although they participate in several efforts to promote biodiversity and raise awareness, one task they needed the Commissioners and other local leaders help with is raising awareness about the importance of pollinators including Monarch butterflies.

During the tour the students shared with Commissioner Director Kuhls many attributes of the garden and the sustainability projects they are involved with in and outside the school building. They also shared their research on reducing pesticides, setting a late Spring start date for landscapers to use blowers, community trash clean up days, and how to incorporate native plants in the unfinished green wall on the Flemington circle. The students also made sure to ask him to sign the National Wildlife Federations Mayors’ Monarch pledge supporting Monarchs and pollinators.

A monarch butterfly fluttered through the milkweed and coneflowers, during the tour, showing its support and appreciation for the students' efforts to grow and protect more habitat. Way to go, Huskies!
